 Butin Named First Dean of New School of Education
Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., has announced the creation of a new School of Education. The first dean of the school will be Dan W. Butin (Ph.D. '02) a graduate of the Curry School's social foundations program. Butin was formerly an assistant dean, Department of Educational Leadership, for Cambridge College's School of Education. Renzulli Receives McGraw Prize in Education
Joseph S. Renzulli (Ed.D. ’66 Ed Psych) is a distinguished professor at the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education, the Neag Chair in gifted education and talent development, and director of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. Mr. Renzulli received the 2009 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education for his guiding work in gifted and talented enrichment. The honorees were recognized at a dinner at the New York Public Library. The Prize was established in 1988 to honor Mr. McGraw’s lifelong commitment to education and to mark the McGraw-Hill Corporation’s 100th anniversary. Mr. Renzulli’s research has focused on the identification and development of creativity and giftedness in young people, and on organizational models and curricular strategies for differentiated learning environments that contribute to total school improvement. For more than thirty years, his Schoolwide Enrichment Model has been used in more than 2,500 schools nationwide. Researchers have found the program improved attitudes among students, teachers, parents and administrators toward gifted education and produced positive results in achievement. Mr. Renzulli began his career as a math, reading and science teacher in Ocean Township, N.J.
McTigue is Outstanding New Faculty at Texas A&M
Erin M. McTigue (M.Ed. '03 C&I; Ph.D. '06 Reading Ed) was recently named 2009 Outstanding New Faculty in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University. McTigue is an assistant professor in literacy and is in her third year with the Department of Teaching Learning and Culture. Read more about McTigue's work at TAMU.
Frederick S. Morton, IV, Superintendent of Henrico County Public Schools, was named Virginia's Superintendent of the Year at the Virginia Association of School Superintendents annual conference in Roanoke. Morton (B.S. '75, M.Ed. '79) leads one of the largest school districts in the state. Four other Curry School alums were named Regional Superintendents of the Year. Read more.
The Curry School of Education Foundation at the University of Virginia has announced the winners of its Outstanding Alumni Awards for 2009, which recognize exemplary contributions to the field of education. Two recipients were selected for the honor of Curry School Distinguished Alumni: Alfredo J. Artiles and Andrew J. Rotherham. Other recipients include a superintendent, two principals, and three teachers. Read more.
Roy Wins Student-Faculty Award
Cathy Roy, both an M.Ed. and Ph.D. graduate in Exercise Physiology from the Curry School of Education, was awarded Longwood University's Student-Faculty Recognition Award. Now serving as associate professor of exercise science at Longwood, Roy was honored for her professional excellence and devoted service to students.
Featured Alum: Bob Barnhardt
 “The Curry School opened my mind to the broader issues of running a public institution of higher education,” says Bob Barnhardt (M.Ed. ’70; Ed.D. ’74). By the look of his subsequent career accomplishments, his Curry education served him well.
Bob already knew a bit about running a school when he came to Curry. In 1966 he left the faculty of the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science and took a position as dean of the Institute of Textile Technology in Charlottesville. (more)
